Dear California SAOVA Supporters:
AB1634, the Levine mandatory pet spay-neuter bill, has been
amended again and is set for hearing before the Senate Local
Government Committee on June 11, 2007. This is our best
opportunity to defeat this bill. There are only five (5) committee
members and they are more moderate and levelheaded than the
Assembly legislators that passed this measure.
The latest set of Levine amendments is
largely cosmetic gamesmanship. The bill remains unacceptable.
This is still a mandatory sterilization bill. Required
sterilization is changed to six (6) months, rather than four (4),
with veterinarian requested extensions possible to twelve (12)
months. The exemption requirements have been reworded slightly and
mixed breeds added. Animals not qualifying for the previously
described exemptions now may be bred once, if the male and female
are both owned by the same party, the litter given away without
charge and the parents then sterilized. The names of new puppy or
kitten owners must be reported to authorities.
* There are no exemptions for the vast
majority of hunting and stock dogs. They must be castrated or
spayed. *
This ill-conceived bill can be defeated, but
only with your concerted efforts. No AKC officer or director has
yet committed to testify. Please telephone and fax your opposition
statements ASAP to the following the Local Government Committee

California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA)
Despite the deep concerns and prolonged
efforts of some California veterinarians to reverse the CVMA's
position cosponsoring AB1634, on June 14, 2007 its House of
Delegates voted 20-9 to continue to support this ill-conceived
bill. Moreover, the current president and president-elect waged
unrelenting war on those thoughtful and supportive professionals.
This isn't a disagreement over a diagnosis; the association's
leadership has permanently lost its way.
Half of the California's veterinarians don't
belong to the CVMA. For the protection of your pets and sport, see
if your DVM is a member at http://www.cvma.net/findavet.asp Teal
colored font indicate dues paying members. If necessary, request
that your DVM drop his or her membership. If they refuse, use that
same search function to find another veterinarian who is more
sensitive to your concerns and cares about your animals, rather
than one promoting every animal rightist, anti-owner whim.
Sincerely,
|
